Application Process
A completed Application Package must be submitted to the HAESF office in Budapest by the application deadline. All applications must be complete and include the following materials written in English:
- HAESF Graduate Scholarship Application Form - a PC-writable template that you should save as a word document, complete and print.
- Personal Statement (detailed instructions included on the Application Form)
- Acceptance Letter from the receiving American institution (if available by the deadline)
- 2 Letters of Reference (1 academic, 1 professional/experiential).
The Letter of Reference should:
- Be written or translated into English
- Indicate the nature of relationship with applicant
- Program's relevance for applicant's future and career goals
- Assessment of applicant's character, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses
- Detailed contact information of the referee
Letters of Reference should be submitted in a signed and sealed envelope.
- Proof of English language proficiency (for non-native English speakers). Please submit one of the following:
- TOEFL: minimum score of 600 on the old paper-based exam (ITP) or 90 on the Internet-based exam (iBT)
- Any complex English language exam at a C1 (advanced) level
- Complex state proficiency exam of English language (advanced level) and its English translation
Please note that prior to or shortly after every application deadline, HAESF provides applicants who fulfill all other HAESF eligibility requirements but do not have a state recognized advanced language exam with the opportunity to take an institutional TOEFL exam. - Current Curriculum Vitae or Resume
- Entire university transcript (index) translated into English and certified by university. (1 copy of university transcripts is sufficient)
- A copy of your university diploma and its English translation
- A copy of any other relevant certificates of completion (from technical/trade colleges, apprenticeships, etc.)
Interviews
In order to complete the application process, applicants who meet the minimum requirements and best embody HAESF's values, goals and objectives, may be invited for an interview, conducted in English. The interview serves multiple purposes: to learn more about the candidate's professional goals and objectives.
Selection
The HAESF Graduate Scholarship is a competitive fellowship award and therefore reserves the right to select a limited number of applicants to receive the award, who the selection committee decides best embody the values, goals and objectives of HAESF. Applications and interview assessments will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of HAESF's Board of Advisors and HAESF representatives . Applicants will be selected based on but not limited to the following criteria:
- Potential future contribution to Hungarian society
- Matching professional objectives to the values and mission of HAESF
- Clearly articulated professional goals
- Well-rounded personality
- Strength of recommendations
- Ability to serve as an ambassador of Hungary
- English language communication skills
- Diversity of majors, professional interests and applicants
- Overall financial need
Notification & Acceptance Process
Selected Applicants will be notified via regular mail regarding the final status of their application according to the published timeline.
